NPTE Plan

NPTE pacing calculator (PT and PTA)

Short answer

The PT exam is 225 questions in 5 sections over 5 hours, which is 80 seconds per question — 45 questions per 60-minute section. The PTA exam is 180 questions in 4 sections over 4 hours, which is also 80 seconds per question. Only 180 of the PT items (140 of the PTA items) are scored; the rest are pretest items you cannot identify, so there is no point trying to skip "experimental" questions.

180 of the 225 items are scored; the other 45 are pretest items that count toward the clock but not your score.

Pace only. FSBPT sets the official format; check the current Candidate Handbook before your exam date.

How this works

Question counts, section structure and total testing time come from the NPTE Candidate Handbook; scored-item counts come from the 2024 content outlines. Pace is testing time divided by total items, including pretest items, because pretest items consume the same clock. The ahead/behind figure compares questions answered against the number the published pace predicts at the minutes you enter. Scheduled breaks are not testing time and are excluded.

Worked examples

Ninety minutes into the PT exam the published pace predicts 67 questions answered. If you have done 58, you are 9 behind — about 12 minutes of debt, which is recoverable within a section but not if it repeats. On the PTA exam, 120 minutes predicts 90 of the 180 questions: exactly halfway.
